F.E.A. - Finite Element Analysis for Die Set Design

Superior F.E.A. Services

BENEFITS and FEATURES

Our Finite Element Analysis design service now offers you a "high-tech" way of determining your die set performance based upon your stamping applications. This design service can be applied to the analysis of die sets, weldments and forging products. Features of the F.E.A. Service are:

  • Static Stress with Linear Modeling
  • Fatigue Analysis
  • Design Variation and Improvement Results
  • Proof of Die Set Design before Manufacturing

VERIFY Common Design Practices

Evaluate the design considerations of pin diameter in relation to die shoe thickness. Based upon improving the ratio of pin diameter to die shoe plate thickness - results will vary. This evaluation shows that the maximum stress in the Guide Pin decreases as the Die Shoe Plate thickness is increased.

COMPARE Your Design Scenarios

This example concerns the typical wear plate boss die set. The effects of high loading stress can be shown on the three types of boss design. The stress reduction in this area of the die set assembly is reduced based upon manufacturing techniques.

Suitable Components - Improvement Results

By changing the parameters of the components, Finite Element Analysis can show improved results before die set manufacturing. Save time, operate with more dependable and longer lasting stamping production.

F.E.A. APPLICATION - Horizontal Forging Machine Impeller (RAM)

This heavy duty horizontal forging machine, Impeller Ram, is subject to extremely high shock loads during rapid blow rates, 90 to 170 blows per minute. These high shock loads encompass a Rated Force of 4,200,000 pounds, which is the Maximum Blow Energy along with the 8000 pounds of Blow Energy.
The customer's current design was modeled for stress analysis and indicated a potential cracking failure under the operating conditions. This cracking failure in the analysis is equal to the customer's actual failure in the real world of manufacturing.

The stress concentration was evaluated to help eliminate the cracking failure.

Changing the full radius in the bottom portion to a relief radius and changing the dovetail angle to a smaller angle eliminated the stresses significantly to gain an optimum life cycle for the Impeller Ram.

FEA services from Superior Die Set can be applied to a variety of machine components prior to manufacturing to insure the designs will give extended tool life.
